Yoga is like the ocean. When you go to the beach, you can see the sea from afar, walk along the water's edge, soak your feet, or take a bath. The same goes for yoga - either practicing the asanas for a short period of time to get rid of a disease, practicing daily postures or committing to the study of yoga on a deeper level. Each experience will give you satisfaction.
Yoga is a gateway to spiritual growth. To experience the true essence of yoga, it is beneficial to learn from a professional instructor.
It is beneficial to follow one yoga discipline at a time. Practicing techniques from different disciplines causes confusion and hinders spiritual progress.
The following tips will help you in creating a positive experience:
Before the first step, as with any other exercise program, check with your doctor.
In Yoga class
• Wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for temperature.
• Avoid wearing belts and jewelry in class: they restrict the proper flow of prana (vital energy) and get in the way when you practice postures.
• Do not use any scented product.
• Do not eat for at least three hours before class.
Basic rules for practice
- The philosophy and techniques taught in the yoga class may be new to you. Keeping an open mind will expand and enhance your yoga experience.
- Only do the postures with which you feel comfortable. Forcing you to do a posture can cause injury. With regular practice yoga, you will be able to expand your abilities.
- Yoga postures should be stable and pleasurable. With practicing yoga postures, you may experience some pain in your muscles. This is fine as long as there is no pain. Pain is a sign of excessive force, or lack of form and alignment. Focus the posture with gentleness and patience. With gradual and consistent practice you will be able to improve your body alignment.
- Each student is on a different level. No two people perceive and experience yoga in the same way. There is no competition in yoga. Stay with your own experience in a non-critical way.
- Do not combine your practice in class with other techniques you may have learned from other disciplines.
- Keep the sanctity of the yoga room, refraining from gossiping and talking unnecessarily.
When the body is not in good condition
Listen to your body and let common sense be your guide. If you feel the weak body, do the postures gently. Breath deeply. Practicing Yoga gently can help you recover faster. However, do not do the postures and breathing exercises if you have a fever. Let your instructor know of any medical conditions that may be of concern to you. Always seek medical advice.
